Wayne Kramer To Direct Futuristic ‘Ecstasia’

Wayne Kramer: overrated or underrated? Depends who you ask. He made a name for himself with the indie “The Cooler” and followed it up with post-Tarantino multi-strand Paul Walker thriller “Running Scared” which in this writer’s opinion doesn’t deserve the cult following the film has. After that, Kramer switched it up again with the political drama “Crossing Over” which found him battling with the Weinsteins who ultimately buried the film. Earlier this year, Kramer was tapped to direct the Sylvester Stallone vehicle “Headshots” but later bowed out over “creative differences” with word that he had his another project brewing that was close to getting financed. Well, it has.

Deadline reveals that Relativity is now backing the sci-fi porn sounding “Ecstasia,” a future-set drama that Kramer has written and will direct. In what seems like a tired allegory on modern relationships, the film takes place “at a time when love no longer exists, except when it is artificially stimulated through a costly procedure called ‘commitment.’ Ecstasia is an emotional Viagra that comes from a implanted computer chip. It is incredibly expensive to maintain, and without it, couples can no longer maintain feelings for one another. Kramer’s film revolves around a man and woman who turn to desperate measures when they can no longer afford the costs of ‘commitment.’” Not even eHarmony will help out these folks.

No word yet on when it will roll, but we presume it will gear up at some point this year. Casting and all that fun stuff has yet to happen, but certainly names will begin coming forth. But we will say this, we’re glad Kramer continues to mix it up. While we may not appreciate his entire resume, it’s good to see a director consistently moving in new directions. We just hope there is much more to this premise.
