‘Piranha 3DD’ Takes A Bite Out Of Thanksgiving
The Weinstein Company have announced some new dates on their calendar for this year and one film has noticeably been taken off.
“Apollo 18,” the Timur Bekmambetov-produced found footage space thriller monster thingy has been bumped from it’s previous date of April 22nd, all the way to the dumping ground weekend of January 6, 2012. The first weekend of the New Year is generally a dead zone for movies, with critics and audiences alike still recovering from the holiday season onslaught of prestige and blockbuster fare. No reason has been given for the delay but likely, the Weinsteins realized they had a piece of shit on their hands and given that the film was madly rushed into production late last year to meet a spring date, it probably gives everyone involved some time to make it look at least halfway presentable.
In other news, “Our Idiot Brother” (formerly known as “My Idiot Brother“) will get a late summer date of August 26th. The film, which premiered at Sundance to strong buzz, including a solid review from man on the ground, who called the film “a story of family and forgiveness, shows us people trying to be good, trying to be more than themselves, and has amazing comedy bits ranging from huge sight gags and ba-doomp-boomp! punchlines, to razor-sharp sentences that boomerang back after they’ve whizzed by and silent expressions that convey volumes.” And starring an awesome ensemble cast including a ridiculously stacked ensemble including Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight and Janet Montgomery the film should definitely provide some hearty competition for “Final Destination 5” which opens the same weekend.
And speaking of scares, “Piranha 3DD” has surprisingly been given a November 23rd release date which puts the fishy horror spectacle right in the mix that holiday weekend. Sony and Paramount will likely be pissed as their big 3D tentpoles “Arthur Christmas” and “Hugo Cabret” will now be battling with yet another film for screens that require dorky glasses while Warner Bros. can no longer count on their low-budget comedy vehicle “Project X” being the only piece of counterprogramming over the Thankgiving holiday. Well played Weinsteins.
Rounding things out, the Sarah Jessica Parker rich-white-woman-with-problems-rom-com “I Don’t Know How She Does It” opens on September 16th and we don’t care. [Deadline]
