It has been a long, long time since we’ve seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. Ok, she did make the rom-com “The Rebound” with Justin Bartha a few years back but that film is still trying to find a buyer, but a big role in the upcoming “Rock of Ages” might get fresh interest in that title which is currently sitting on a shelf.
THR reports that Zeta-Jones will play the villain of the film, a role that wasn’t in the stage musical. Director Adam Shankman describes the character as “if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles.” Quel horreur! Deadline adds she’ll sing Pat Benatar‘s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and Twisted Sister‘s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” — the latter of which seems like an odd choice for a right-wing conservative.
In case you forgot, Paul Giamatti will have the unenviable task of managing the band fronted by Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) in the story about Sherrie (Julianne Hough), the small town girl who travels to Los Angeles with dreams of making it big and falls in love. Mary J. Blige co-stars in the role of Justice Charlier, the owner of the Sunset Strip’s exotic dance venue the Venus Club. Russell Brand takes on the role of Lonnie in the film who runs the ‘80s rock club The Bourbon, owned by Dennis (Alec Baldwin), while Mexican singer and actor Diego Boneta has been confirmed for the role of nice guy and aspiring rocker Drew Boley.
Filming will begin soon, but there is probably little bits and pieces of casting still to come. No release date, but it’ll probably hit sometime in 2012.
