While most people probably know Jon Hamm from “Mad Men,” (which this writer believes is currently the best show on TV), many know he’s also been quietly building a career in comedy. In addition to three excellent stints hosting “Saturday Night Live,” he’s also had a recurring role on “30 Rock” and has a supporting role in the upcoming comedy “Bridesmaids,” which our team just saw at SXSW and called “hilarious and heartfelt.” Fans might also know he’s known to occasionally make low-key appearances at the UCB Theatre as well as on various comedy podcasts. Basically, he’s the real deal.
The LA Times interviewed “Bridesmaids” director (and “Freaks and Geeks” creator) Paul Feig, who called Hamm a “comedy nerd” and praised his abilities. “He will quote lines from ‘Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy.’ You’re quoting something even I can’t quote!”
Feig, who with his latest film has managed to give star/co-writer Kristen Wiig a perfect vehicle for her comedic talents, is also looking to develop one for Hamm as well. “He’s always wanted to do comedy. One of the next things I’m developing a project for him to star in. I think he’s so funny. He’s like Cary Grant to me.” So, while no word yet on exactly what this project might be, the prospect is a hugely exciting one. Especially considering his work in “Bridesmaids” has already spawned some quotable lines out of its screening at SXSW.
And speaking of that film, a new trailer has just landed and it’s a solid peek at the film, mixing the humor and heart we saw in evidence over the weekend. The film hits on May 13th, and we can’t wait.
