To be certain, Roman Polanski‘s last effort, “The Ghost Writer,” polarized The Playlist staff. While some found it be a pretty harmless, if not particularly memorable, political potboiler, others completely hated it (though we all agreed Kim Cattrall‘s accent was egregious). Even on the score, some of us loved Alexandre Desplat‘s whirring strings, while others found it be a weaker work from the accomplished and prolific composer (the Christmas party eventually turned ugly). But regardless of all that, Polanski’s latest has us all pretty excited, bringing together a top notch cast for the film version of an acclaimed play.
“Carnage,” by French writer Yasmina Reza (the play is originally called “God Of Carnage“), is a New York-set story (a location the helmer can’t film in, for obvious reasons, and instead has been shot in Paris) that follows two sets of middle-class parents who meet for dinner after their children get into a fight at school. Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz take on the roles of Penelope, Michael, Nancy and Allen, respectively, and this should easily be an actor’s showcase. The film recently wrapped shooting and as it heads into post, we figure it’s a surefire bet for TIFF later in the year.
“It all happens in real-time, so it’s about an hour and 45 minutes of negotiation between two sets of parents and how it all falls apart,” Foster told Empire who also snagged the first look images at the film. “Kind of like ‘Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?,’ but a little funnier. There’s a lot of wit.”
Sounds fantastic and we can’t to wait to see these thesps trade barbs. No word on a release date, but as mentioned, we assume it will be part of the fall film festival schedule somewhere.
