Have you said to yourself recently, “Man, I could really go for another ‘Tomb Raider‘ movie.” Well tonight, those prayers have been answered.
Deadline reports that GK Films has picked up the screen rights for “Tomb Raider” and the wheels are in motion for a reboot to land in theaters in 2013. For you kiddies too young to remember, the original films starred Angelina Jolie and were based on the popular video game that was not really that good to begin with but spawned a huge following thanks to the novelty of a busty heroine kicking ass. This resulted in two equally mediocre films, released in 2001 and 2003 and directed by Simon West and Jan De Bont respectively. But those two films combined grossed $423 million worldwide at the box office plus whatever they made on merchandising spin-offs, so why not take another swing at the piñata?
No word yet on a writer, director or star for the film but we’re sure that names will start cropping up imminently (interestingly, Olivia Wilde was recently rumored and though she denied those reports, it’s an intriguing coincidence; we wouldn’t be surprised if she’s on a wishlist). So hey, another video game movie. Woo! If the film can do “Resident Evil” type numbers — another female led, video game franchise — GK Films will be very, very happy. Meanwhile, Universal is getting cold feet on Guillermo Del Toro‘s “At The Mountains Of Madness” — that’s Hollywood folks.
