Halle Berry Returns & Carla Gugino Joins ‘New Year’s Eve’

Our favorite movie of all time — one that we’ve even puzzled ourselves with our repeat reportage of — is Garry Marshall‘s “New Year’s Eve.” Or it will be when it eventually comes out.

Two more thespians have joined the fold of this ensemble rom-com which closely follows the formula employed with Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day,” and they are Carla Gugino (“Watchmen,” the low-budg “Elektra Luxx” films) and Halle Berry. Wait, didn’t Berry leave the picture only to be replaced by Katherine Heigl? Yes, apparently her child custody woes aren’t so bad so she’s rejoined the picture. But not to worry, Heigl fans, she won’t be replacing your beloved actress, but will instead take another open role. At this rate, the film must have about 87 characters. As for Gugino, she’ll be playing a doctor (snicker) who deals with a couple played by Seth Meyers and Jessica Biel who are destined to have their child at the stroke of midnight.

Like V-Day, “New Year’s Eve” places a coterie of disparate characters in interconnected stories of love and loss over the course of the evening before we ring in the new year. The picture is not for us, but considering the “Valentine’s Day” grosses — $216 million worldwide — they are for someone, and perhaps a starved demographic.

The film stars the aforementioned along with Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Sienna Miller, Sofia Vergara, Til Schweiger, Josh Duhamel, Ice Cube, Ryan Seacrest and Alyssa Milano. It hits on December 9th. [THR/THR]
