Like any casting run-up for any comic/franchise/tentpole film, a number of actors were rumored and wishlisted, but the names that were in the final running for Zack Snyder‘s “Superman” included Matthew Goode, Matthew Bomer, Armie Hammer, Joe Manganiello and Colin O’Donaghue. However, what eventually landed Henry Cavill the gig was something as simple as those in the audition room not giggling when he came out dressed in the iconic suit.
“He walked out, and no one laughed,” Snyder told EW an interview set in this week’s magazine. “Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go ‘Wow.’ Okay: This was Superman.’”
But here’s the thing that made it even more difficult: Cavill wasn’t wearing the suit that will eventually end up in the new film. He had to test wearing a replica of Christopher Reeve‘s famous — and dated — outift. Hence the titters when other actors put it on. It was a savvy move for the audition process by Snyder who rightly says, “If you can put on that suit and pull it off that’s an awesome achievement.”
While rumors of script problems surfaced earlier this week, work on the film is plowing ahead. It will start shooting later this year for a December 2012 release.
