Is Fox facing a double whammy of bad news? Just days after Darren Aronofsky bailed on “The Wolverine” — which is already facing a delay thanks to the devastating earthquakes in Japan — it looks like another major franchise might be looking at some difficulty due to the events overseas.
Corona Coming Attractions (via ScreenRant) claim that according to their source, James Cameron‘s planned expedition down six-and-half miles into the Mariana Trench to shoot footage for “Avatar 2” is now not guaranteed to get covered by insurance liability.
According to the report, the ongoing aftershocks from the 9.0 quake potentially make the quest a little more of a dangerous prospect, or at least risky enough that insurers don’t want to cover the trek under water. Of course, it remains to be seen if this report is accurate but there is a certain logic to it that makes sense. No studio is going to want to send the creative brainchild and director of their biggest franchise ever to the bottom of the sea if there is even a whisper of a chance he won’t surface, and a quake of that magnitude in the region is certainly a cause for concern.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. When the sequels were first announced, it was said that Cameron was planning to start production for “Avatar 2” at the end of this year, but the December 2014 release date for that film is still a long, long way off and if anything, it might just mean he re-arranges his own schedule of when he gets that underwater footage.
