J.K. Simmons Joins Mark Wahlberg In ‘Contraband’

With filming already underway, Mark Wahlberg‘s “Contraband” has added one more to the dirty dealing picture.

In a must-read Random Roles piece in the AV Club, excellent character actor J.K. Simmons reveals that he’ll next appear in the remake of the Icelandic film “Reykjavik-Rotterdam” saying, “I’m going to shoot a film called ‘Contraband’ in New Orleans with Mark Wahlberg next month, and I’m playing a captain.”

Directed by Baltasar Kormakur who starred in the Icelandic original, and penned by Black List approved Aaron Guzikowski, the film follows a security guard and former smuggler (Wahlberg) who, facing financial troubles, is roped back into his old life. Ben Foster is on board as Wahlberg’s brother-in-law with Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna and Lukas Haas rounding out the cast.

The cast coming together on this one is better than the average for a standard thriller and it will hopefully result in a decent popcorn movie. The film is currently slated to open on March 16, 2012 opposite “21 Jump Street.” But with all the release date jostling happening right now, don’t be surprised if it that changes.
