Matthew Vaughn Eyes Another Superhero Pic With ‘The Golden Age’

Wishlist Cast Includes Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson & Warren Beatty

So much for “Kick-Ass 2” (sorry Mark Millar). Despite the reportedly rushed production on “X-Men: First Class,” Matthew Vaughn certainly isn’t tiring of the genre or cracking under the pressure and is looking to flip the equation for what will be — if it comes together — his third straight superhero film.

Deadline reports an unnamed studio is hot on financing his project “The Golden Age.” Unlike the young, amateur crime fighters of “Kick-Ass,” or the franchise origin story of ‘First Class,’ this one will instead focus on “retired superheroes who help out their grandchildren when their middle-aged parent screw up the world.” The film will be based off the upcoming comic of the same name by Jonathan Ross.

The project is still in early stages with a lot of questions to be answered. It’s not yet clear if Vaughn’s longtime collaborator Jane Goldman will pen the script (he might farm it out to someone else) of if he’ll even direct (he may just produce). However, he’s aiming big for this one with Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty on his wishlist for casting (but realistically speaking, we don’t see that trio coming together). We’d reckon that his decision to direct or not will be determined once a script and cast is in hand. However, the actors signing on board will have to take a leap of faith; Vaughn wants his cast first before work is started on the script.

Obviously, audiences love the idea of aging badasses (“Red,” “The Expendables“) so we can see why a studio is eager to get a new project in a similar vein mounted, particularly with a very hot helmer leading the way.
