Our love for Wong Kar-Wai knows almost no bounds, even if the director’s been slightly off his game in the last few years (“2046” has some defenders on staff, “My Blueberry Nights” not so much), so there’s no question that his new film, the long-awaited “The Grandmasters,” is one of our most anticipated of the year.
The picture, a biopic of Yip Man, the first martial artist to teach Wing Chun, and the man who trained Bruce Lee, among many others, has finally wrapped up a shoot that lasted nearly a year, and the picture’s being pushed to prospective buyers at the Berlin Film Festival, and Hong Kong paper The Sun (via Wong Kar-Wai News) have found a few new images for the film, which toplines Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi.
The images, which include what seem to be a couple of teaser posters for the film, continues the distinct visual aesthetic from the images that we’ve already seen, suggesting, at the very least, the absence of the director’s most regular collaborator, Christopher Doyle, hasn’t hurt matters too much (Phillipe Le Sourd, of “Seven Pounds” and “A Good Year,” steps in).
There’s still no official word on the film’s release, and while a Cannes premiere would be nice, it seems doubtful that the meticulous director will rush to make it the Croisette as filming only wrapped recently. Maybe Venice? Check out more of the images below.
