Tom McCarthy, the director behind the tender and lovely “The Station Agent” and the heart-wrenching “The Visitor,” is one of our faves and with his third effort “Win Win” on the way it appears the helmer has once again delivered another strong pic about outsiders finding their way.
The film stars Paul Giamatti, Melanie Lynskey, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor and Bobby Cannavale and focuses on an attorney and volunteer high school wrestling coach (Giamatti) forced to look after a client’s errant grandson. Our man at Sundance, James Rocchi, found McCarthy once again balancing the hilarious and the heartfelt with a deft hand while focusing on “the possibility of small victories in the face of the possibility of titanic loss.” While the rest of us will have to wait until the spring to see the film for ourselves, an early clip showed lots of promise and evidence of the tonal balance described, and now we have a poster for the film. Yeah, it’s nothing groundbreaking or particularly revelatory but this is an indie dramedy not a $200 million blockbuster so it serves its purpose well.
“Win Win” will hit theaters on March 25th. [Vulture]
