Here’s another quick round up of the latest posters from a handful of movies due out in the next couple of months. Summer movie season will be here before you know it and that means the pre-summer movies will start rolling out in April. (We can’t believe it either.) That means lots and lots of poster debuts for the various franchises, sequels and spinoffs coming over the next 6 months.
First up are the remainder (we think) of character posters for the latest in the neverending “Pirates of the Carribbean” franchise, “On Stranger Tides.” These typically glossy images feature costars Ian McShane as Blackbeard the pirate, Penelope Cruz as saucy love interest Angelica and Geoffrey Rush returning once again as Captain Barbossa. They’re not bad really, we’re kinda digging the yellow green color scheme on these as it makes them instantly recognizable. If you need a little more Pirates action before the film debuts May 20th, the latest trailer also arrived this morning.
Debuting somewhat less successfully are the latest posters for Marvel Studios “Thor.” Based on the long-running comic book about a hammer-wielding god cast out of the mythical realm of Asgard to live on Earth, we get that this one is going to be a hard sell. So it’s understandable the studio have been a bit less sure-footed in their marketing but they haven’t seem to come up with a solution for how to cram the film’s 5 leads into one image. The pic on the right actually reminded us a bit of an old (but not exactly classic) superhero poster. The greater challenge is making not one but two (along with “Captain America“) lesser-known characters into hit movies this summer before “The Avengers” next year. We’ll see if their efforts are successful or not on May 6th when the film opens.
Also unveiled is the newest one-sheet for “Fast Five,” the latest in the fast cars and hot chicks franchise. This writer has to admit he’s never actually seen one of these films but was actually pretty impressed with the latest trailer. For a film stuffed with as many cars as characters, the poster shows remarkable restraint (just look at that negative space!) The film races into theaters on April 29.
Last but not least is the U.K. one-sheet for David Gordon Green‘s “Your Highness.” Showcasing Danny McBride over Oscar winners/nominees Natalie Portman and James Franco as well as some giant snakes and dragons, this one is an improvement over the film’s static U.S. version. The “Krull“-inspired comedy will be released on April 8th.
