It’s been twenty-five years since Chris Knight and Lazlo Hollyfield made us laugh and cry in “Real Genius,” and just when we thought that alchemical pairing of Val Kilmer and Jon Gries was lightning in a bottle never to be repeated, it looks like our prayers for a rematch have been answered.
THR reports that the duo have reunited for the indie drama “Deep In The Heart.” Based on a true story, the film follows Richard Wallrath (Gries) an alcoholic who reinvents himself and puts hundreds of kids through college via his charitable donations. He is assisted by “The Bearded Man” (Kilmer) who “resides in Wallrath’s mind as a “Christ-like figure” to help him on his path to recovery.” The film will also feature a cameo by Texas Governor Rick Perry.
It sounds like it could be interesting (or simply a Hallmark movie-of-the-week) but with Christopher Cain directing — his best credit was helming “Young Guns” two decades ago — we won’t be surprised if this is yet another random Val Kilmer movie that barely gets a release and then disappears into the bowels of a WalMart bargain bin. No distributor is attached to the film just yet.
