With the spring/summer movie season barely started this year, studios are already making their claim on dates in 2012 and Warner Bros. has just thrown their weight around, planting two major films with big, June bows next blockbuster season.
First up, the Adam Shankman directed musical “Rock Of Ages” will arrive on June 1, 2012. Starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige — with more to be added — this starry, ’80s fueled musical is based on the hit stage show that follows a small town girl who travels to Los Angeles with dreams of making it big, and falls in love. All the ingredients are in place for a “Mamma Mia” sized megahit, and with Judd Apatow‘s “Knocked Up” spinoff also scheduled for the same weekend, don’t be surprised if Universal blinks and moves the picture (hey guys, June 22, 2012 might be a much better fit, just saying).
Meanwhile, Bryan Singer‘s “Jack The Giant Killer” will hit on June 15, 2012. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, John Kassar, Ewan McGregor and Ian McShane, the film is a revamp of the famous fable and sure to be a special effects spectacular. The other movie opening that weekend is the Andy Samberg/Adam Sandler vehicle “I Hate You Dad” so this is a pretty good counter-programming move and we figure both movies will stay put, playing to their respective audiences.
