Third Installment Of The Cornetto Trilogy Not Even Started, C’mon Guys!
If you don’t speak geek-ese like we do, here’s a translation: The “Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy is the unofficial nickname of the films made by director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (a nice knowing nod to Krzysztof Kieslowski which we appreciate) Presumably, you’ve heard of the first two installments, “Shaun Of The Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” and while they are not sequels of any kind, they all star Pegg and Frost, they’re penned by Pegg and Wright and they’re directed by the “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” filmmaker.
When Pegg and Frost wrote their alien roadtrip film, “Paul,” the first person they thought of was their constant collaborator Wright, but of course, he became busy with the aforementioned slacker vs. 7-ex boyfriends action romance. Enter “Superbad” director Greg Mottola, who turned out to be a more than capable equivalent for their winning action-adventure-comedy picture “Paul” which also stars the rather stellar cast of Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver and Joe Lo Truglio (read our review from the U.K).
So the hardcore fans want to know, when is the third installment, tentatively titled, “The World’s End” going to appear? Well, the problem is these boys are rather busy. Pegg has a “Mission Impossible” film to finish and do promotion for and a “Star Trek 2” film to shoot before he can even start writing, and Wright has his own writing assignments to tend to including an action comedy set up over at Working Title called “Baby Driver” and Marvel’s “Ant Man.” On top of all that, he’s just finished his final leg off tireless ‘Scott Pilgrim’ promotion.
“Me and Edgar are going to try and get together and write out the third thing, whether it ends up being called that, I don’t know,” Pegg said yesterday at the press junket for “Paul.”
“[We’ll write it] as soon as we can basically,” he continued. “Edgar’s now, as we speak, finished his ‘Scott Pilgrim’ promotion in Japan, so he’s going to have some time, and hopefully after ‘Mission Impossible’ I’m going to have some time so we can sit down and get the ball rolling and hopefully turn it over quicker than normal.”
For those that are impatient, but need to obviously learn to wait, Pegg at least thinks the writing part should be quicker then usual. “We’ve written two films together now so this should maybe not take as long as ‘Shaun’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ did,” he explained. “And of course Nick will be involved from the beginning. It’s just a question of logistics, practicality and timing, but we’re so ready to do it.”
“Paul” hits theaters on March 18. “The World’s End” starts writing… hopefully soon.
