SNL Star Kenan Thompson One Of The ‘Party Starters’

The track record of “Saturday Night Live” member vanity projects is littered with failure. “It’s Pat,” “The Coneheads,” “The Ladies Man,” “Hot Rod,” and even last year’s “MacGruber” (which was actually good) have shown that moviegoers aren’t interested in seeing sketch comedy actors try their hand at features (at least not until they’re off the show). It seems that making that jump to the big screen while still attempting to create yuks on the late night show is a recipe for disaster. But that won’t stop Kenan Thompson.

Deadline reports that the wheels are in motion for the actor to star in “Party Starters,” a comedy that will be penned by Bryan Tucker, a longtime writer for SNL. There are no plot details yet, but from what we can surmise, it is about a party and Thompson will be one of those who is tasked with getting it started.

Listen, we have no hard feelings against Thompson. He can be pretty amusing on the show in small doses, but are we ready to deal with 90 minutes of him in a film that — given the track record — will feel cobbled together, undercooked and hilarious to only the few people who came up with the idea in the writer’s room? Not really. But hey, we’d be happy to be surprised.
