‘Circumstance’ & ‘Buck’ Win Audience Awards
Sundance officially closes tomorrow, but tonight the awards were handed out in grand fashion in ceremonies presided over by Tim Blake Nelson, who arrived dressed up as a snowflake. While there were a number of strong films competing this year in the U.S. Dramatic Competition including “Homework,” “Take Shelter,” “Pariah,” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” it was Drake Doremus‘ tale of long distance love “Like Crazy” that grabbed the Grand Jury Prize. The film, which has earned a string of positive notices out of the festival (including one from our man on the ground James Rocchi), also snagged a Special Jury Prize in acting for Felicity Jones — somewhat surprising given the whirl of buzz surrounding Elizabeth Olsen for “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” However, that film wasn’t entirely left out in the cold as Sean Durkin won the Directing Award. Audiences however, tipped their hat to a different film entirely with “Circumstance” — a tale of forbidden love in Iran — earning it the Audience Award.
On the documentary side, the jury awarded the grim “How To Die Oregon” about medically assisted suicide with Jury Prize. Audiences however, went for lighter fare, with “Buck,” about horse whisperer Buck Brannaman, winning the award voted on by ticket holders.
Overall, it’s been an excellent year at Sundance with a number of films creating buzz early on for what promises to be a festival season with many solid pictures to choose from. “Like Crazy” was picked up by Paramount, Sundance Selects landed “Buck” and Participant Media acquired “Circumstance” — so look for them soon. “How to Die in Oregon” is still seeking distribution but with an award now under its belt don’t be surprised if tomorrow buyers try to close a deal before their planes leave.
