SXSW: Hope For The Marvel Fans: Joe Cornish & Edgar Wright May Be Finishing Up ‘Ant-Man’ Script Soon

In case you haven’t heard, “Attack The Block” killed Saturday night at SXSW and our writers in Austin flat out loved it (check out our review). We got some coffee in our system and sat down with director Joe Cornish and executive producer Edgar Wright on Sunday to talk about the film, and they revealed a little bit of progress on “Ant-Man,” the film adaptation comic fans have been speculating about for a while now.

“We’re currently working on it, not right now. But the day after tomorrow we’ll go to Los Angeles and…[nods to Edgar],” Cornish said about the status of the film.

“We kinda have a stock response now, it’s true to say we’ve been writing it in some form,” Wright added about the brewing film, revealing that it’s been in the works a bit longer than most may have realized. “Weirdly, the treatment for ‘Ant-Man’ exists before Marvel Studios. There was a treatment that Joe and I did when Artisan had the kind of lower-rung Marvel properties and we wrote a treatment for it that exists before ‘Hot Fuzz.’ Basically, when I met Kevin Feige I said, ‘Oh, did you ever get our ‘Ant-Man’ treatment?’ and he had never read it so we submitted it properly like four years later. So it’s something me and Joe have genuinely been working on for nearly a decade and at some point we’ll finish the script.”

As we chatted, we surmised that once they meet in L.A. about the film, Wright and Cornish will likely polish off a new and/or updated draft, submit it, and then see what happens from there. So, don’t slot this in as Wright’s next directorial vehicle just yet. The helmer has a couple of other projects he’s been developing over the past little while including the music-driven action pic “Baby Driver” as well as another, more minimalist script inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville‘s “Le Samourai.” So we’ll have to wait and see. —reporting by RP
