Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark’ Gets International Distribution, Still No Domestic Date
One film of a handful snared up in the sale of Miramax was Massy Tadjedin‘s “Last Night.” The film premiered at TIFF last year but its North American release was tied up thanks to changing of hands when Miramax went up for sale. Well, there is now some light on the horizon and a release in sight.
Variety reports that Tribeca Film has landed theatrical, VOD and certain digital rights to the film, with Miramax retaining home video, TV sales and long-term digital rights. The film is now being prepped for a spring theatrical release in major markets like Los Angeles and New York with VOD also in the works. Starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, the film follows the story of a married couple whose commitment to each other is tested when they are apart for a night; the husband away on work with a colleague he’s attracted to and the wife as she coincidentally runs into a past love. The film has received some good notices and we’re definitely glad it will be making its way to a release. But not every film in the Miramax stable is so lucky. The trade also reports that the while the Guillermo Del Toro-produced, Katie Holmes-starring “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark” has landed an international deal with Pathé, there is still no domestic date. Boo-urns.
In other news, “Everything Must Go,” the indie dramedy starring Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall and Michael Pena will get a limited bow on May 6th courtesy of Roadside Attractions. Inspired by a Raymond Carver short story, the film follows a recovering alcoholic (Ferrell) who holds a yard sale of his life belongings after he gets fired and comes home to find that his wife has thrown all his stuff on the lawn. While the film split the Playlist crew (our man at LFF was less enthusiastic than our dude at TIFF) but both agreed Ferrell was in excellent form and is worth seeing.
