Films By Peter Mullan, Dax Shepherd & More Round Out Schedule
It seems a new player has emerged on the indie film distribution and they will be making a big impression in 2011. Tribeca Films announced today an intriguing slate of films adding to the already includes the previously announced “Last Night” starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet.
Kicking off the films that are sure to grab some attention is Deborah Chow‘s “The High Cost of Living.” The dark romantic drama stars Zach Braff and Isabelle Blais in a story that is put into motion when a hit and run incident sees an eight-month pregnant woman, Nathalie (Blais), lose her baby while the intoxicated young male responsible, Henry (Braff), flees the scene of the crime in order to save himself from police prosecution. However fates align and the two soon coincidentally stumble upon each other though both remain blissfully unaware of the other’s role in the accident. What transpires is the unlikely relationship between the two and their parallel confrontation of loss, and whether the cost of living is worth the price.
Scottish actor and sometimes director Peter Mullan returns with his first effort behind the camera since 2022’s “The Magdalene Sisters” with “NEDS.” The film is a semi-autobiographical tale of a promising student who falls in with a violent gang in 1970s Glasgow (the title is local slang, standing for “Non-Educated Delinquents”), which stars a mostly unknown cast led by newcomer Conor McCarron. “Brother’s Justice” marks the feature directorial debut by Dax Shepard. The wacky premise has the cast — featuring Bradley Cooper, David Koechner and Jon Favreau — playing versions of themselves as Dax decides to leave comedy and become a mixed martial arts star. The catch? He has no training! You can determine how funny this is (or isn’t) by checking out the trailer.
Other films of note that are slated for a theatrical release this year include: Vincent D’Onofrio‘s rock ‘n roll horror musical (seriously) “Don’t Go In The Woods“; the angsty comedy “Beware The Gonzo” starring Zoe Kravitz, Ezra Miller, Jesse McCartney, Amy Sedaris, Campbell Scott and James Urbaniak; the horror thriller “The Bleeding House” by comic book writer and first time filmmaker Philip Gelatt; the supernatural flick “Grave Encounters” by the Vicious Brothers; the documentary “Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston” about the legendary designer; based on a true story tale “The Bang Bang Club” about war photographers starring Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman and Taylor Kitsch and “Janie Jones” the music-driven road trip drama starring Abigail Breslin, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Shue and Brittany Snow.
One notable film not getting a theatrical release doing straight to VOD is Jerzy Skolimowski‘s “Essential Killing” in which Vincent Gallo plays a Taliban fighter. Enough said. That pretty much had our $12 right here. Guess we’ll have to wait for it show up digitally.
No release dates have been assigned just yet but expect these films to show up on the calendar in 2011.
