Well things are moving fast for the indie “The Music Never Stopped.” It was picked up by Roadside Attractions before the Sundance Film Festival, played Park City and is now set to be released next spring. Striking while the iron is hot we suppose.
Based on Oliver Sacks’ case study “The Last Hippie,” Jim Kohlberg‘s first feature explores a family divided by the culture clash of the 1960s but who are forced to come together when the son suffers a brain tumor that affects his memory and the power of music that draws them closer again. The film stars JK Simmons (who looks to be giving the performance of a career here), Lou Taylor Pucci, Cara Seymour and Julia Ormond and true to its storyline, it features a bounty of music in the film from The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The trailer isn’t anything new but it looks to be genuinely heartwarming story and coupled with the ace music in film, it looks like a nice little treat and a worthy diversion from the tentpole fare that will start invading multiplexes next month.

The Music Never Stopped, based on the case study “The Last Hippie” by Dr. Oliver Sacks, M.D. (Awakenings), chronicles the journey of a father and son adjusting to cerebral trauma and a lifetime of missed opportunities. Through the music that embodied the generation gap of the 1960s, and working with music therapist Dianne Daly (Ormond), the film weaves the heartwarming progress of Henry (Simmons) and Gabriel (Pucci).
