Will Catwoman Appear In ‘The Dark Knight Rises’? Anne Hathaway (Sort Of) Says Yes

Granted, this is a little thin and it could ultimately mean pretty much nothing, but considering the plot details for “The Dark Knight Rises” will likely be under lock and key for a while yet, we’ll take what we can get.

When it was announced in January that Anna Hathaway would be taking on the role of Selina Kyle, most assumed that meant Catwoman was going to appear in the film too, not just her alter ego. We weren’t quite sure ourselves, figuring that Nolan would want to avoid overstuffing the third installment in the comic franchise with villains and that Kyle would likely play a love interest but that Hathaway would be unlikely to suit up in spandex. But maybe we’re wrong.

In an interview with Oprah (via THR) following the Oscars on Monday, Hathaway recounted how she landed the hosting gig saying that she was actually waiting for the call confirming her casting in “The Dark Knight Rises” and she repeatedly refers to her character as Catwoman, not Selina Kyle.

“I was waiting to hear back to hear if I’d been cast as Catwoman [in The Dark Knight Rises], and my manager called me and said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ and I just go, oh my god, here it comes. [Hathaway takes a deep breath.] She’s like, ‘You’re about to hear something you’ll never hear again in your whole life. I’m like, ‘OK.’ And she goes, ‘You’ve been asked to host the Oscars.’ I’m like, ‘I’m Catwoman! What?! Oh, oh, OK. What?’,” Hathaway told Oprah.

So, will Hathaway suit up? It seems like it — it seems odd she would refer to her character as Catwoman if she wasn’t. We’re of two minds about this — Catwoman worked very well in the already campy world of “Batman Returns” but in Nolan’s very straight, realism-based Gotham we’re a little concerned how it might play. But then again, if anyone can make it work, it’s Nolan.

Filming on “The Dark Knight Rises” starts later this year with Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt all on board and Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman pretty much guaranteed to return. Still more casting to come.
