Here’s the thing about shortlist stories — sometimes they’re wrong, sometimes they are just refined wishlists and sometimes they simply leave people off. While Will Sasso landed the part of Curly in “The Three Stooges” movie, he was initially listed as Moe and now, the second member of the comedy trio to be added wasn’t on any of those lists to begin with.
Deadline reports that “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes has landed the role of Larry in the upcoming Farrelly Brothers film. James Marsden, Shane Jacobsen, Justin Timberlake, Woody Harrelson and Larry David were names tossed around as contenders but Hayes has climbed atop the heap. No matter how you try to spin it, Larry was pretty much the least flashy of the three and probably not the biggest fan favorite either. That said, with the Farrelly Brothers contemporizing the story, while keeping the spirit of the comic trio intact, it will be interesting to see how Larry operates in the updated reboot. He was a simpleton and a straight man in many ways, but Hayes has got some serious comic chops and it will be intriguing to see how he brings the character to life.
The new film will be made up of three shorts telling one single story that will deliver the old school nyuks nyuks of the classic black and white laffers, while placing the trio in a modern context. It’s a high concept comedy in many ways, with a format audiences aren’t too familiar with, so it will be interesting see how it plays out. All that’s left to cast is Curly, and of all the Stooges, we’d imagine whoever plays him will come under some very close scrutiny.
But so far, the Farrellys seems to be sticking to their guns in finding the right person for the role, not necessarily a big name. Filming on “The Three Stooges” is set to begin later this month.
