2011 Writers Guild Nominations Has Some Surprises

Well, we’ve already covered the snubs, but in case you missed it, the WGA disqualified a batch of movies from their awards including “Another Year,” “Biutiful,” “Blue Valentine,” “The Ghost Writer,” “The King’s Speech,” “Made in Dagenham,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Toy Story 3” and “Winter’s Bone” as they were not made under WGA jurisdiction.

So while some very deserving scripts are getting a pass the remaining nominees do boast some surprises. We’re glad to see “Please Give” finally get some recognition after pretty much being ignored this awards season and we had no idea “I Love You Phillip Morris” was based on a book, but at any rate, it’s interesting to see that it made the cut. Otherwise, the rest of the nominees are pretty much what you might expect (“Inception,” “The Fighter,” “True Grit,” “127 Hours” etc etc) but don’t expect this to be much of an Oscar predictor as the disqualified films are still eligible for Academy nominations.

The awards will be handed out on Saturday, February 5. Full list of nominees below. [IndieWire]
