Entertainment Weekly (via Coming Soon) has scored the best in-costume look so far of Chris Evans as Captain America in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” And, well… that is one busy suit. What we’ve been told so far is that Cap will have many different uniforms during the movie, but the combat-heaviness of this particular ensemble suggests this may be the final look. And oh, the pouches. Rob Liefeld just orgasmed like an errant piston.
It seems similar to the battle-practicality of the look the character sports in “The Ultimates” comic line, with a mask/helmet fusion looking to bridge the gaps between the source material and real life. The desire to render these sorts of things practical fascinates us, as it starts to move farther and farther away from the real purpose of a comic book movie, and this thing just looks awfully uncomfortable from a fashion perspective. Not sure how Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man is going to react when going into battle with a guy dressed like a football player, though we are digging the gun holster, mostly because we’re sick of the idea that superheroes and firearms don’t mix. Updated: hi-rez image has arrived. Larger version below the jump.
Unfortunately, it might be awhile until we see it in action. According to a branding consultant named Gregory Littley, who claims to have seem the footage, he suggests on his Twitter (via io9) that the footage “isn’t amazing.” Which could mean anything, of course, but Marvel has given us a big juicy peek at “Thor,” and remain quiet on their other big summer tentpole, without even the suggestion that Cap will be one of the big Super Bowl premieres this winter. Of course, the natural inclination when studios don’t give you an immediate first look is to pooh-pooh the project, and we’re not going to fall into that reactionary trap. But if we don’t get a picture of Bucky in the next month, this will be the worst movie of the year.
