Campaign Begins For Best Original Song Nomination For Sigur Rós Frontman Jónsi’s ‘Sticks & Stones’

It looks like Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi would like to have an Oscar on his mantle.

With Academy Award nominations just over two months away, the singer stopped by “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” last night to play, not a song off his debut solo album “Go,” but instead his contribution to the “How To Train Your Dragon” soundtrack, “Sticks & Stones.” While it might seem odd to find Jónsi crooning on a kid’s movie, the film was directed by Dean DeBlois who helmed the solid Sigur Rós concert doc “Heima” (definitely worth seeking out if you’re a fan).

The song (like Jónsi’s solo work) isn’t too far from the recent sounds of Sigur Rós, taking their trademark style and filtering through a slightly more pop bent. If anything, the performance should give Academy producers an idea of what to expect should he get nominated, and should they reinstate the live song performances at the ceremonies this year. Bjork‘s swan dress may no longer have a stranglehold on most awesome/bizarre Oscar gear ever. Check out the performance and listen to the song after the jump. [Stereogum]
