David O. Russell To Rewrite & Direct Action Comedy ‘2 Guns,’ Vince Vaughn Attached To Star

Back in the fall, “2 Guns,” an action-comedy with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson was announced….and then sort of forgotten. The project was in pretty early stages and while Wilson, at least for now, no longer seems to be in the mix, things are moving forward with some very impressive talent.

Deadline reports that Oscar-contender David O. Russell may be adding yet another project to his already packed slate, as he’s eyeing a rewrite of the script as a potential directing gig with Vince Vaughn still attached in one of the two lead roles. Based on the graphic novel by Steven Grant, the film would follow two lawmen — a DEA agent and an undercover naval officer — who investigate each other as each have been tasked to steal mob money. The first draft of the script was done by Blake Masters (“Brotherhood,” “Rubicon“) but it’s easy to see why Russell may be interested; it’s breezy, high concept fare given to his particular brand of comedy.

This isn’t the first project Vaughn and Russell have been looking at together, as the two were gearing up to make the road trip dramedy “Old St. Louis” throughout the fall with a spring start date in mind but movement on the project seems to have cooled off a bit. Russell is of course also still working on “Uncharted,” and it’s been the focus of much of his “The Fighter” press rounds talk (no thanks to Mark Wahlberg who can’t seem to stop blabbing about it), but even that project still needs a finished script to move forward (as of last month, he was halfway done).

That’s all there is on this project for now but certainly Vaughn could use a quality film after a staggering run of increasingly shitty rom-com fare. If Russell throws him a life preserver, he needs to hang on for dear life.
