And They Still Probably Won’t Make Any Sense
Bloated and water-logged, we’re kind of done with “The Pirates Of Caribbean” franchise as we can’t say we really care about or are particularly looking forward to “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides“. Yes, the first film was a kind of enjoyable romp but each successive film has gotten longer and more convoluted to the point where we just don’t care to try and keep up. Not to mention that the appeal of Jack Sparrow has kind of worn off on us. But we’re clearly in the minority; the series is a huge success, with the franchise taking in over $2 billion to date and that’s not even counting the endless merchandising and other tie-ins. So of course, Disney wants to keep that money train rolling.
HitFix, who have been spending some time around the set of ‘On Stranger Tides,’ report that plans are already underway for two more sequels (ugh) with the bold plan to shoot them back-to-back. Disney are apparently telling cast and crew to set aside some time in their calendars for a potential ‘Pirates 5’ and ‘Pirates 6’ shoot.
It’s unclear just when Disney wants to get the sequels in front of cameras, and obviously, it’s still in very early stages. Johnny Depp already has “Dark Shadows” and “The Lone Ranger” on his 2011 schedule, but HitFix speculates that a 2012 shoot could be a possibility which would certainly make some sense.
There are a still a lot of questions to be answered — who will write the script? who will direct? who might be returning? how will this affect the numerous other projects Depp is attached to? — and we suppose that speculation will now start running wild. But at the very least, if Disney does move ahead with this, we only ask for one thing: a coherent storyline. Because at this point, we frankly have no idea what’s going on anymore.
At any rate, for those of you are still wanting for more Jack Sparrow, the trailer for ‘On Stranger Tides’ will premiere on Monday, December 13th while the film will swashbuckle its way into theaters on May 20, 2011.
