Sure, the internet may be ablaze this afternoon with images of Spider-Man and Captain America, but you know what we’re more excited about? This. The firmly excellent romantic drama “Blue Valentine,” finally shorn of the albatross that was its NC-17 rating, has begun its limited rollout, and is going great guns, picking up a mean screen average and an impressive haul of over a million on only a few screens. a gratifying debut for a film that became something of a favorite of many Playlist team members over the course of 2010.
One of the best aspects of Derek Cianfrance‘s film is the excellent soundtrack, provided by Brooklyn indie favorites Grizzly Bear. While not an original score (the band were originally meant to write new music for the project, but when the start date was pushed, they ran out of time), the collection of instrumental versions of tracks from the band’s back catalogue was still one of the very best aural treats that’s been found on the big screen of late. There’d be no confirmed word of a soundtrack release until now, but Lakeshore Records have kindly, and exclusively, given us details of the release, which hits stores on February 1st. Update: iTunes release date has been bumped up to January 25.
There’s an overwhelmingly Grizzly Bear-heavy tracklisting, which is no bad thing, but there’s also two other tracks that are pivotal to the film — “You and Me” by Penny & The Quarters, the central couple’s favorite song, and actor Ryan Gosling‘s excellent, ukelele-aided version of “You Always Hurt The Ones You Love,” which scores the film’s trailer. Check the tracklist out after the jump, and head over to the soundtrack’s official Facebook page for more details.
