Some more news from Ridley Scott‘s developing but not yet greenlit “Alien” prequel. A lot of casting rumors and other bits of production info have been flying around of late, with most of it turning out to be untrue, but Scott Free appears to be continuing to put pieces for the eventual film in place as it awaits an official thumbs up from 20th Century Fox to move forward.
First up, AVPGalaxy has come across a recent interview with Carmen Scheifel, the wife of Swiss surrealist painter and original “Alien” creature designer H.R. Giger, who says that her husband is “on board” to work on the prequel and that the film will be in 3D. She also says there might be a second film as well (something that Scott himself has mentioned numerous times over the past year), though for now, 20th Century Fox says there is only one film in the works. Can’t say we’re too surprised that Scott is re-teaming with Giger to come up with what we assume are designs for the space jockey who will be the focus of the prequel and as it turns out, things are moving full steam ahead on the 3D front too.
Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski has told RED honcho Jim Jannard (via Bleeding Cool), “In my opinion, the new Red Epic camera is about to revolutionize all spectrums of the film industry. I am going to use Epics in my new project directed by Ridley Scott.” The move now makes the film the third major upcoming blockbuster following “Spider-Man” and “The Hobbit” to utilize the lightweight, 3D cameras and it looks like a trend is developing. Jannard claims that principal photography will start in the spring but we’d imagine that’s a projected start date that will be contingent on everything falling into place.
Wolski is an interesting choice to man the cameras, as he did just finish his first 3D shoot — “The Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” — and has a world of experience with blockbuster sized fare (“Alice In Wonderland,” “Eagle Eye“) so we’re sure his experience will be welcome on the set.
It certainly looks like Ridley Scott is getting his entire team in place for the behind the camera work but the big question still remains who will stand in front of it for the new “Alien” tale. We have a feeling it’s exactly that very question that is holding up the project from kicking forward but with Scott putting his ducks in a row, we won’t be surprised if that issue is resolved very soon.
