Says This One May Be The Best One Of The Series; Has Parts For All The Original Characters Plus New Ones
“There is almost nothing that is accurate online about that film.” So says director Ivan Reitman who answered some questions about the long gestating sequel, “Ghostbusters 3,” while doing press rounds for the forthcoming fuck friends comedy “No Strings Attached.”
So let’s just do a brief recap of the various rumors and news that have surrounded the film in the past little while: it will start shooting May; Will Forte, Bill Hader and Anna Faris are circling roles in the film; the movie will come out in fall 2011 or Christmas 2012; Bill Murray spits vitriol at the proposed film; Bill Murray shows up at the Scream Awards in full Ghostbusters gear; Ernie Hudson says Bill Murray is in the film; Bill Murray sings karaoke (okay, this has nothing to do with “Ghostbusters 3” but is just kind of awesome).
According to Reitman virtually everything about the proposed plot — details of which have had Sigourney Weaver‘s son coming back to head up the team, with Bill Murray making a reel one appearance as a ghost — are false with Reitman only revealing that all the original characters as well as some new faces will have parts in the new film, which he thinks will top its predecessors. “Oh, no, yeah… I mean, Sigourney Weaver has a role in this movie. All the original characters have parts. As well as a whole bunch of new characters… it’s got a really good story, this one. Maybe the best of the whole series. I hope we get to do it.”
As it turns out the script written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg — which rumors said was greenlit in the early fall — has actually only been completed about a month ago, so all that talk by Murray earlier in the year calling the project a “myth” seems to make some sense considering he’d never read a word of it. Reitman says, “We have a really good script, but Bill [Murray] has to read it. He hasn’t read it. There has been all kinds of chatter online about him reading it and not liking it. He has not read a thing. He’s never read anything. And I just sent it to him. So we’ll see. God knows how long that will take. But we’ll see.”
So what does all this mean? Well, Bill Murray continues to be the center of whether or not this thing gets made in its current state or has to be reworked. As you might recall, Reitman, Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (who, it should be added, have been the worst contributors to random “Ghostbusters 3” bullshit of anybody) all hold veto power over most of the creative decisions in any sequel and we’d guess getting everybody on the same page will be tricky. Murray has already gone on record dissing Stupnitsky and Eisenberg for the dreadful “Year One” and we’d guess it will have to be a helluva script to get him interested (or just a helluva “Garfield”-esque paycheck gig).
So movement continues on “Ghostbusters 3,” but just at a snail’s pace. Don’t except this one in theaters until at least 2012 and if anyone in NYC runs into Murray at their next karaoke outing, ask him if he’s had a chance to open that envelope from Ivan Reitman yet. [ComingSoon]
