You know what was a super exciting prospect back in March of 2009? The Farrelly brothers making a “The Three Stooges,” film with Sean Penn as Larry, Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe. Cut to more than a year later — and a lot of back and forth — and let’s face it: that film, at least with that cast, is likely never getting made.
Sean Penn was the first to jump ship, immediately taking the wind out of its sails — (though apparently the comedic directors secured him again) and Bobby Farrelly himself once said that Carrey’s involvement was overstated (and fyi, Paul Giamatti was never involved, and del Toro, last we heard was cool with the idea).
Blah, blah, blah, so much back and forth.
But let’s officially cut Jim Carrey from the list now and get on with our day, though boo you Bobby, it sounds like Carrey was very much involved, at least at one point. “I think it’s dead,” he told MTV when asked if “The Three Stooges” Farrelly film would ever get made. Though he was quick to add, “It’s dead at least with me.”
Reasons why? Read ahead.
“For me, I don’t really want to do anything halfway, and I don’t feel like a fat suit does it,” he said. “I started experimenting with it a little bit, and I gained 35, 40 pounds. I wanted to gain another 30, 40. When you’re [Robert] De Niro in your 20s or early 30s, you can kind of come back from that. It’s a tough thing to come back from when you’re upwards of 30. Your body can’t carry it or you can have a cardiac arrest.”
So there you have it. The Farrelly brothers‘ next film “Hall Pass” — yet another new, upcoming film that explores the idea of infidelity which seems to be the newest trend in romcoms these days — stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis and is scheduled to hit theaters February 25, 2011. As for the ‘Stooges’? We’d rather see the Jim Jarmusch-directed doc about the namesake band anyhow.
