Justin Long, John Hawkes & Ryan Phillippe To Star In Indie Pic ‘Chronicle’

There’s not a lot of information yet, but a report about Justin Long’s new production company revealed that he would be starring in a new film, “Chronicle,” alongside John Hawkes and Ryan Philippe. According to the Gramery Park Pictures website, Mickey Rourke, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Mara, Danny Masterson and Vincent D’Onofrio were in discussions to join the cast as of last month, but no word if they will be signing on or have simply moved on (our guess is probably the latter).

All that’s known about director Jay Alaimo’s newest film is that it’s about two childhood friends who reunite to launch the biggest marijuana dealership in New York City. Alaimo has directed two other feature-length films — “Pretzel” and “Slingshot” – both of which he wrote. “Slingshot” premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival, and after, Alaimo focused on television while directing a few episodes of “Scrubs.” Right now, he’s in post-production on “Chlorine,” his third film about an upper-class New England family that loses their fortunes starring Kyra Sedgwick and Vincent D’Onofrio.

This announcement comes as yet another venture for Long and Hawkes, who have quite a bit of work cut out for them in the future: Long with his brand new production company and television deal and Hawkes with a plethora of meaty roles including “The Playroom,” announced earlier today. Philippe also has a few projects slated for arrival next year including a supporting role in “The Lincoln Lawyer” and an role in the heist pic “Setup.” If bigger names like Bonham Carter or Rourke do sign up, then the film offers up a lot of talent for a director that has yet to break out of the indie scene.

There’s no word yet as to when filming will begin or a tentative release date. If the talent comes through, we could be looking at a festival premiere for 2012. – Catherine Scott
