‘Mad Men’ Actress Abigail Spencer Joins McG’s ‘This Means War’

Known for playing one of the many females that led to the destruction of Don Draper‘s marriage on “Mad Men” thanks to his no good cheating ways, Abigail Spencer has joined the cast of McG‘s action romantic comedy, “This Means War” which centers on two lifelong best friends (and spy operatives) who wage an epic battle against one another after they both fall in love with the same woman.

Reese Witherspoon plays the love interest, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are the spies who go to war with each other while vying for her affections. David Koechner (”Anchorman”), Chelsea Handler,Til Schweiger (”Inglourious Basterds”), Leela Savastas and Angela Bassett — who just joined the cast earlier this week — also have roles in the picture.

Spencer’s role in the film is that of Hardy’s ex-wife.

In development for more than a decade with former incarnations of the film featuring Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock, several writers have penned drafts of 20th Century Fox‘s “This Means War” including Burr Steers (”How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days”), Cormac and Marianne Wibberly (”National Treasure”), Kiernan and Michele Mulroney (”Paper Man,” “Sherlock Holmes 2”), Tim Dowling (”Role Models”) but Marcus Gautesen (”Carboy”) will be credited with the story (Gore Verbinski was one of the directors originally attached to helm back in the day).

Spencer’s cache is on the rise having recently nabbed roles in “Cowboys & Aliens” and “The Haunting in Georgia.” “This Means War” has no release date yet, and normally we would assume Fox would try to sneak it into summer 2011. But next summer is massively overcrowded as it is. Or as Jon Favreau puts it, “It’s going to be a bloodbath.” [THR]
