An Australian one sheet has dropped for the still NC-17 rated “Blue Valentine” starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.
The poster promises a far more romantic movie than the film actually is, as it chronicles in gritty, heartbreaking and raw detail the dissolution of a relationship, while flashing back to sunnier times. It’s definitely one of the best pictures we’ve seen so far this year and it’s anchored by arguably career best performances by Gosling and Williams. The tagline of the poster “Nobody Baby But You And Me” references the chorus of Penny & The Quarters‘ “You And Me,” a song chosen by Gosling’s character as the couple’s song. You can check out the clip of that scene in the film after the jump.
“Blue Valentine” is slated to hit theaters on December 31st, but whether or not it plays near you is up in the air. The Weinstein Company is fighting very hard to get the rating dropped to an R; an NC-17 will effectively ghettoize the film to the independent and arthouse circuit only as theater chains generally will not play NC-17 rated films. As we’ve been saying time and again, it’s a ridiculous rating and one that deserves to be downgraded particularly for a film as good as this one is.
