New Look At James Gunn’s ‘Super,’ Film Hits Theaters On April 1, 2011

April Fools Day just got a kick in the teeth.

IFC has announced that James Gunn‘s darkly comic superhero parody “Super” will begin a limited rollout in New York and Los Angeles on April 1, 2011. No foolin’. The following week it will hit 25 more cities as well as VOD. The film, which premiered to strong buzz as part of TIFF‘s Midnight Madness lineup this past September, stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion and Linda Cardellini, and follows the story of an average guy (Wilson), who transforms into pseudo-superhero The Crimson Bolt after his wife Sarah (Tyler) leaves him for a smooth-talking drug dealer Jacques (Bacon). Joined by sociopathic teen-turned-sidekick Libby (Page) the two begin to wage war on crime and plot to bring down Jacques.

Here’s a couple new images from the film, including a first look at Kevin Bacon and Ellen Page in her ass-kicking attire. We missed this at TIFF but we definitely like the tone of an early clip that has been revealed for the film. We hope the rest of the picture strikes that over the top, darkly comic vibe.
