We — along with pretty much everyone else — have been Debbie Downers on Michel Gondry‘s forthcoming “The Green Hornet,” and with good reason. The early footage and trailers failed to impress and the late stage announcement of 3D didn’t exactly help matters, but hot on the heels of some positive test screenings and with the release not that far of, a new trailer has arrived for the film and you know what? It actually looks like this could be decent.
Now, don’t get us wrong. It’s not going to be next “The Dark Knight” and it hardly looks like it’s going to break any new ground, but as a dumb popcorn comic flick? Yeah, it finally looks like it could be a fun time at the theater. The new spot doesn’t try to hide the fact that it’s a very goofy riff on the comic book genre, with most of the laughs coming from Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) getting acclimated to his new role as crime fighter, The Green Hornet. That said, Christoph Waltz, utterly compelling in “Inglourious Basterds” seems kind of wasted here as a standard baddie and Cameron Diaz continues to barely factor in the film. However, there is a bit more here to suggest that Gondry’s imprint will be felt (ie. that rotating camera bit) and the 3D look is very obviously self-aware. So yeah, we’re feeling a bit better about this one overall.
“The Green Hornet” hits on January 14, 2011. Check out the trailer after the jump.
