We’ll give the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller “Limitless” this much — it nails the depiction of the freelance writer as a scraggly, sloppy mess pretty accurately. Or maybe this writer has said too much about himself already.
Anyway, following a pretty clever little viral for the film, we now get a full-length trailer and unfortunately, despite the talent and an intriguing premise, “Limitless” looks ridiculously hokey. The film centers on a writer (Bradley Cooper) whose dependency on a designer “viagra for the brain” drug — which makes one more intelligent — hits a stumbling block when his stocks dwindle and dangerous side-effects affect his sanity. The writer must then venture into the drug’s dark past to feed his habit all while suffering the drug’s side effects of sanity splitting headaches, spontaneous blackouts and violent outbursts. Sounds pretty cool right? So why then does the trailer just remind us of a jacked up episode of “Seinfeld“? You know, the one where George stops having sex and becomes a genius pretty much overnight. Sort of the same thing is happening here though he doesn’t end up hooking up with the likes of Abbie Cornish. If only. It certainly gives writers everywhere pecking away at their keyboards in the dark some hope. And kudos at least to some good music in the trailer including Goldfrapp‘s “Strict Machine” and Kanye West‘s “POWER” — maybe a sign of a decent soundtrack on the way?
Robert De Niro and Anna Friel co-star in the film that hits theaters on March 18, 2011. Synopsis and trailer below (or watch it in HD at Apple).
