Pic Is A Spin-Off Of Marshall’s Successful ‘Valentine’s Day’ Romantic Dramedy
After somehow scoring half the talent in Hollywood — Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, etc (Julia Roberts was paid $5 million for five minutes of screentime) — for his tepid and mawkish ensemble film, “Valentine’s Day,” director Garry Marshall is gearing up to amass another sizable cast for the film’s spiritual sequel, “New Year’s Eve.”
While it won’t be a proper sequel with the same characters, (though Taylor Swift has been rumored to return), the concept is similar, finding disparate characters with various romantic problems or issues getting ready to ring in the New Year and, of course, their lives overlap here and there.
And so yes, the formula proved successful — $110m domestically — and now Marshall is looking for a new troupe to join his intertwining-lives dramedy. Having already secured “Glee” star Lea Michelle, “Little Miss Sunshine” actress Abigail Breslin is now it talks to play, what else, a 14-year-old-girl, but no character specifics have been allowed yet (other rumored actors being sought include Reese Witherspoon, Zac Efron, Halle Berry and Justin Bieber)
While no shooting date has been set, the film has already been given a December 9, 2011 release date. It will be set in New York, and, like the formula dictates, will track the interconnecting lives of several individuals trying to navigate romance during New Year’s Eve. As we mentioned last time, Garry, you’ve already utilized half of Hollywood’s rom com actors, so some of our suggestions for this go-round include Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, hell, half the not-already-used cast of “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and, why not, Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke to boot. As much as we like him Matthew Goode seems to be open to this kind of dreck too (please no Amy Adams). Best of luck. [Variety]
