Christopher McQuarrie Says The Lead Role In ‘Top Gun 2’ Belongs To Tom Cruise’s Maverick

Are you ready America!?! Are you read for the return of Maverick!?! Well you better be because “Top Gun 2” isn’t going to be some sissy way-after-fact sequel with a bunch of guys you don’t know with Tom Cruise popping his head in to give a thumbs up. No siree. The Maverick himself is going to be leading the charge on this one.

In an email to Vulture and correcting their earlier reports, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has revealed quite plainly that, “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.”

Muddying the waters a bit is Tony Scott, who says he will be directing the film, but doesn’t seem to have read McQuarrie’s script or doesn’t seem to be interested in it. He told HitFix, “I’m not waiting for a script. I’m going to do my homework. I’m going down to I think it’s Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it’s a whole different world now,” Scott said. “These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”

Following up on the war-led-by-computers theme, Scott also says the film will “partially examine the end of the era of fighter pilots.” Snore. Whatever it’s about, who cares right, as long as there are fucking jet planes, explosions, hot babez and FUCK YEAH AMERICA WE’RE NUMBER ONE WOOOOOOOOO!
