James Cameron To Direct ‘Avatar 2’ & ‘Avatar 3’ Next

Sorry ‘Cleopatra’

While James Cameron certainly hasn’t been shy about talking up proposed sequels to his blockbuster “Avatar,” it always seemed like something he would get to in a couple of years. Well, it looks he will get to it slightly sooner than anticipated, as 20th Century Fox has announced that James Cameron is making “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” his next films. But you’re gonna have to wait to see them.

While production on “Avatar 2” is set to begin at the end of 2011, it won’t hit theaters until December 2014, with “Avatar 3” coming in December 2015. Cameron is going to put pen to paper early next year, but it’s not yet decided if he will be shooting the films back-to-back, but seeing as how they are coming a year apart, we think its most likely that he will.

So what will these future films cover? Earlier in the year Cameron revealed that “Avatar 2” will plumb Pandora’s oceans and he was already mapping out plans for the third installment in the franchise. But if you seriously can’t wait for more blue people adventures, there is the “Avatar” novel on the way, as well as the special edition DVD/BluRay coming to stores on November 16th. As for “Battle Angel,” the recently proposed “Cleopatra” and the handful of other projects on Cameron’s plate, looks like they’ll be moved to the backburner for the the next half decade.
