You know, we really tried to be optimistic about this. The cast features a bunch of very funny people we really like such as Jason Segel, T.J. Miller, Romany Malco, Joe Lo Truglio and hell, even Jack Black, who can be great in the right circumstance. And with a script co-written by Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him To The Greek“), we figured this might be the rare mainstream comedy that would have some fun with its premise. But alas, that’s not to be.
A new trailer has dropped for “Gulliver’s Travels” and if you didn’t like the previous, tepid spot, this won’t come close to changing your mind. In short, it’s a mess that tries to shorthand its way around the laughs. Are you ready for Star Wars jokes? How about fat jokes (you see the weapons from the tiny people of Lilliput can’t get past Black’s flabby flesh)? How about mega product placement (how much do you think Steve Jobs is loving that a giant iPhone is going to be viewed my millions of people who happen to catch this trailer in the weeks up to the film‘s release)? And then, the last resort of any film starring Jack Black, the poorly shoehorned-in jam session, in this case to KISS, so Black can mug and air guitar shamelessly to the camera. Bleh. And as a side note, what is up with Jason Segel’s accent? It sounds like he’s auditioning for a night school production of “Great Expectations.”
Marketed to parents who endured “Night At The Museum,” this one should bring out the kids in droves but parents may want to flip to decide who gets to stay at home. “Guillver’s Travels” will set sail on December 22nd. Trailer after the jump. [Moviefone]
