Step aside, “The Idea of You” — there’s another Oscar winner playing one-half of a celeb-fueled May-December romance for a streamer.
Following Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway’s turn in the adaptation of “The Idea of You” for Prime Video, fellow Oscar staple Nicole Kidman leads Netflix’s long-awaited rom-com “A Family Affair” alongside Zac Efron.
Kidman plays mother Brooke Harwood whose daughter (Joey King) works for mega movie star Chris Cole (Efron). Little does Brooke know, Chris just might be harboring feelings for her, despite their age gap.
Lest we forget that Kidman and Efron got a little um, slippery together in “The Paper Boy” back in the day. Oh how we’d like to forget.
The logline for their new jaunt reads: A surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman (King), her mother (Kidman), and her movie star boss (Efron) as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.
“A Family Affair” co-stars Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy, with Oscar nominee Richard Lagravenese (“Beautiful Creatures,” “P.S. I Love You”) directing.
In addition to “A Family Affair,” Kidman will also lead another age-gap romance…albeit with a more sinister twist. Kidman is set to star alongside Harris Dickinson for Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller “Babygirl.” She’ll play a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern (Dickinson). Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, and Jean Reno round out the cast for Reijn’s sophomore feature.
Kidman recently received the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award for her contributions to cinema.
“It is a privilege to make films,” Kidman said during the ceremony, while thanking “the storytellers who allowed me to run wild, be free, and play all these unconventional women.”
Kidman added, “There are so many little weird films I’ve done, and I know there are people out there … who stuck up for my weird choices, and I’m so grateful for that. I’d like to think I’m getting started, but it’s not true, because, really, let’s just hope I’m in the middle. I’ve got my fingers crossed. There are so many more exciting young directors and writers and voices that are completely original and need to be heard, and they have a lot to say… I’m here and ready to roll up my sleeves.”
“A Family Affair” premieres June 28 on Netflix. Check out the trailer below.
