Four college best friends reunite almost a half-century later for the wedding of a lifetime in comedy “The Fabulous Four.”
Susan Sarandon, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Megan Mullally play three bridesmaids who travel to Key West to celebrate the surprise wedding of their college bestie (Bette Midler). The foursome take weed gummies, join TikTok, and try kegles while on vacay. Of course, they also dive into their decades-long baggage.
Bruce Greenwood and Timothy V. Murphy also star. Jocelyn Moorhouse directs the comedy written by Jenna Milly and Ann Marie Allison. “The Fabulous Four” is produced by Lauren Hantz and Richard Barton Lewis.
The trailer debuted during the Tony Awards as the film stars Tony winner Midler and Tony Award-nominated actress Ralph.
These days, it is more weddings than divorces on-screen for Midler. The actress told People in 2022 that her iconic divorcée film “The First Wives Club” won’t be landing a sequel. The 1996 feature starred Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn as a trio of jilted women who seek revenge on their respective former spouses.
“I used to lobby for ‘First Wives Club 2,’ but there were political reasons they didn’t want to do that again. And it always broke my heart,” Midler said. “I really felt that it was a pretty serious diss, because when women have hits, it’s a fluke. But when men have hits, isn’t it great? At least that’s what they told us on ‘First Wives.’”
The same trio, Hawn, Midler, and Keaton, were attached to the film “Family Jewels” in 2020 (via Variety) to mark a “First Wives Club” reunion of sorts about three women who were all at one time married to the same man but become friends after his passing. “Family Jewels” was never made.
“The Fabulous Four” premieres July 26 in theaters from Bleecker Street. Check out the trailer below.
