Nicole Kidman is getting into erotic power plays with the upcoming psychosexual corporate thriller “Babygirl.”
The actress stars alongside Harris Dickinson for the A24 feature, marking “Bodies Bodies Bodies” director Halina Reijn’s latest film. “Babygirl” centers on a successful CEO (Kidman) who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern (Harris Dickinson). The film was first announced in November 2023.
Antonio Banderas, Jean Reno, and “Talk to Me” breakout Sophie Wilde co-star. The busy Kidman has mainly been on TV these days, from “Lioness” to “Expats” and Netflix’s streaming-only film “A Family Affair.” She received an Oscar nomination in 2020 for “Being the Ricardos” and recently received the AFI Life Achievement Award. Harris Dickinson, meanwhile, is a recent breakout of films like “Scrapper” and “The Iron Claw” and 2023 Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.”
“Babygirl” premieres at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in competition along with films like “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Maria Callas biopic “Maria,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” and Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, “The Room Next Door.” Harmony Korine’s “Baby Invasion,” “Wolfs” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and Alex Ross Perry’s rock documentary “Pavements” screen out of competition, among many others from beloved returning directors. The festival takes place from August 28 to September 7. Isabelle Huppert is the jury president.
A24 will release “Babygirl” theatrically later in 2024, with a December 20 debut currently set according to the company’s press site. The film’s score comes from Emmy-winning “The White Lotus” composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, with cinematography by Jasper Wolf. David Hinojosa produces “Babygirl” with writer/director Reijn. Prior to “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” Dutch filmmaker Reijn directed the 2019 Dutch drama “Instinct,” which the Netherlands submitted for the Best International Feature Oscar.
Reijn’s 2022 satirical satire “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” set in a secluded mansion during a storm, was an indie box office hit for A24 that year ($14 million worldwide). The rising star cast included Amandla Stenberg, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Pete Davidson, Rachel Sennott, Maria Bakalova, and Lee Pace.
More A24 titles in 2024 include recent theatrical releases “Janet Planet,” “MaXXXine,” “Sing Sing,” and “Tuesday,” with Berlinale winner “A Different Man” coming in the fall along with “We Live in Time,” “Heretic,” “Y2K, and “The Front Room.”
