“The Eternal Daughter” filmmaker Joanna Hogg is returning to the Venice Film Festival, this time, as the jury president for the 21st edition of Giornate degli Autori, also known as Venice Days.
Hogg directed “The Souvenir,” “The Souvenir Part II,” and “The Eternal Daughter,” which debuted in competition at Venice in 2022. She previously served on the 2020 Venice Film Festival jury when Cate Blanchett was president. Now, Hogg succeeds Portuguese filmmaker João Pedro Rodríguez in the role of Giornate degli Autori jury president.
The 2024 Venice Film Festival celebrates the 10th anniversary of the GdA Director’s Award, bestowed to one of 10 films in its competition. The winning film will receive a 20,000 euro cash prize, which will be split equally between the director and the international distributor who will use the 10,000 euro to promote the film.
“What could be more fun and stimulating than watching films and sharing ideas with a jury of young cinephiles,” Hogg said in a press statement. “I thank the Giornate degli Autori for inviting me to what I anticipate will be days of joyful and inspiring discussions about cinema and its possibilities.”
The jury consists of 10 former participants in the 27 Times Cinema program for rising filmmakers, which includes 388 young cinephiles from the European filmmaking community. The program was inaugurated by the European Parliament in 2010. Jury sessions are coordinated by Karel Och, the Artistic Director of the Karlovy Vary Festival.
“We are utterly delighted to welcome Joanna Hogg as president of our jury,” Gaia Furrer, artistic director of Giornate, said. “Over the course of her film career, Hogg has probed the human soul, family dynamics, and romantic attachments with great psychological depth, accuracy and a rare authenticity. Her cinema is implosive – the very word used by Martin Scorsese, who produced Hogg’s last three films, to describe the way her films often bring inconvenient and even unspeakable truths to light. I am proud to have her with us on the Venice Lido and know she’ll be an excellent guide for our young jurors.”
Hogg began her filmmaking career with feature debut “Unrelated” in 2008. She directed “Archipelago” and “Exhibition” before her 2019 feature for Element, BBC and A24, “The Souvenir,” won the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Award at Sundance. Its sequel, “The Souvenir Part II,” premiered at Cannes 2021. Her most recent film, “The Eternal Daughter,” starred frequent collaborator Tilda Swinton and was executive-produced by Martin Scorsese. Swinton will also be at the 2024 Venice Film Festival for Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, “The Room Next Door.”
Hogg is currently working on her next feature film set in Los Angeles.
