Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne are traveling into another realm for psychological thriller “Slingshot.”
The film centers on an elite trio of astronauts who board a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. “As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality,” the official synopsis reads.
Emily Beecham, Tomer Capone, and David Morrissey co-star.
“Slingshot” is directed by Mikael Häfström with a script co-written by R. Scott Adams and Nathan Parker. Häfström previously directed 2007 film “1408,” which was based on a Stephen King short story, as well as features “Outside the Wire” and “The Rite.” Håfström first announced “Slingshot” in 2021.
The film is produced by Richard Saperstein, Istvan Major, and Beau Turpin. The executive producers include Ivett Havasi, Shara Kay, Michael Hollingsworth, Tom Nohstadt, Ron Cundy, Nikolett Barabás, Jonathan Krauss, Brooklyn Weaver, and Joanna Plafsky.
Affleck also stars in “The Instigators” alongside frequent collaborator Matt Damon. The Apple Original film is also a reunion for Damon and his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman, who also recently directed “Road House.” Affleck, who co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean, stars as an ex-con who teams up with Damon to rob a corrupt politician. Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones co-star, with singer Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman also appearing.
“The Instigators” is produced by Damon and co-star Affleck’s brother Ben Affleck for their banner Artists Equity. Affleck’s “Manchester By the Sea” producer Kevin Walsh also produces “The Instigators” under his multiyear producing deal with Apple TV+. (To further round out the circle here: Damon produced Affleck’s 2016 film “Manchester By the Sea,” which won him the Oscar for Best Actor.) “The Instigators” is solely getting a streaming debut and will not screen theatrically.
Meanwhile, more Affleck-Damon collaborations are underway. Ben Affleck will direct Damon once more after “Air” for upcoming Netflix noir film “Animals.” The thriller centers around a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. The candidate and his wife opt to find out the truth for themselves.
But enough about all of those other movies. “Slingshot” premieres August 30 in theaters; check out the trailer below.
