The TIFF 2024 TV lineup is full of buzzy world premieres and screenings from beloved auteurs venturing into the episodic space.

The Primetime lineup includes eight new series, with five world premieres. For one, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” director Tomas Alfredson reimagines Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullman’s iconic 2000 film “Faithless” as a six-part limited series.

The show’s synopsis reads: “In the present day, renowned director David Howard, 73, is reunited with his former great love, actress Marianne Vogler, 75 (Lena Endre). Their encounter forces them to confront the painful repercussions of their past relationship, not only for themselves but also for their families. 40 years prior, a young David (Gustav Lindh) and Marianne (Frida Gustavsson) find themselves entwined in a passionate love affair which they must keep a secret, as Marianne is married to David’s best friend, Markus (August Wittgenstein).”

Other highlights include the world premiere of Janicza Bravo’s sci-fi series “The Listeners,” starring Rebecca Hall and hailing from Yorgos Lanthimos’ frequent producing partners Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.

Mike Downie’s “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” Courtney Montour and Tanya Talaga’s “The Knowing,” and Dylan River’s “Thou Shalt Not Steal” will also have their world premieres at the festival.

Alfonso Cuarón’s highly-anticipated Apple TV+ novel adaptation “Disclaimer” starring Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lesley Manville, Kevin Kline, and Kodi Smit-McPhee will screen, along with Thomas Vinterberg’s “Families Like Ours” and Joe Wright’s “M. Son of the Century.”

The shorts programming, titled Short Cuts, separately has 48 short films from 23 countries selected from a record-breaking 5,300 submissions. This year’s short films include directorial debuts from Dakota Johnson and Maika Monroe, plus world premieres of new films by Pier-Philippe Chevigny, Connor Jessup, Joyce A. Nashawati, Amanda Strong, and more.

Johnson helms short “Loser Baby” while Monroe directs “The Yellow.”

Beginning in 2024, the Short Cuts program extends to a Strange Cuts lineup to highlight six short genre films in the spirit of Midnight Madness. The short films range from satirical horror to mind-bending animation to innovative thrillers. The program includes world premiere shorts by Matty Crawford, ishkwaazhe Shane McSauby, and Joyce A. Nashawati.

The 2024 Jurors for the Short Cuts Awards for Best International Film and Best Canadian Film are Luis De Filippis, Micah Kernan, and Shane Smith. TIFF is an Academy Award–qualifying festival, and films that win a TIFF Short Cuts Award are eligible to submit for 97th Academy Awards consideration.

The 49th edition of the festival will take place from September 5-15.
